“We do not inherit land from our parents, we borrow it from our children.”
Native American Indian Proverb
Greta Thunberg is making the news, thanks to a pitch that has grabbed the attention of the World. In just a few minutes she has demonstrated how to speak with impact.
Not since Severn Suzuki delivered her gem of a speech at the UN have we seen the younger generation silence global leaders with brilliant messages.
But how did she do it?
There are several reasons but I’m going to highlight the ones that stood out for me.
- Have a clear emotional connection to the problem you are looking to solve
All too often I see people talk without passion, emotion or feeling. This is the fast-track way to switch off an audience. If you are not connecting to the problem that you solve, how do you expect anyone else to?
2. Get to the point quickly
So many people waffle on about nonsense before actually getting to the point/stating what they want. There was no danger of that with Greta. As she watches the older generation talk about the economy as we plunder the planet of its natural ecosystem in the name of money, we must look ridiculous. I can only imagine how unimpressed the next generation are about hearing that the economy is improving whilst we deforest the planet at a ridiculous rate and sea levels rise.
3. Get in front of the right people
This one is obvious, though for your average startup business seeking funding it can seem near impossible. Her message was so powerful that people took an interest and were ready to follow her. If your business or pitch does not draw people in then it probably needs changing.
What is your life about?
Is it about making sure you have enough money to pass on or is it about making sure that you leave a sustainable legacy? It could be both but one is more essential for the longevity of the planet.
“Only when the last tree has been cut down, the last fish been caught, and the last stream poisoned, will we realize we cannot eat money.”

Thank you Greta for showing us all that one great pitch delivered in the right way can make a huge difference to the world.
If your pitch is not yet lighting up the world, why not test it at one of my events and you’ll get the opportunity to find out why.
